Umoja Radio is a youth-focused media initiative founded in 2020 by Kennedy Kario Irungu, born out of a vision to create a platform where young people could rediscover their dreams, express themselves freely, showcase their talents and explore opportunities within the creative and media industries.
The journey of Umoja Radio began with a simple but powerful belief: every young person deserves an opportunity to be heard, seen and given a chance to pursue their dreams.
From its early beginnings, the initiative operated under Vflane, where it continued to develop its identity, audience and purpose. Through this period, Umoja Radio grew beyond being merely a platform for broadcasting and entertainment. It became a space for conversations, creativity, talent discovery and youth engagement.
Establishment Under MAKEGRA FOUNDATION
In 2024, Umoja Radio was formally established under the MAKEGRA FOUNDATION, marking an important stage in its development and giving the initiative a stronger institutional foundation.
Under MAKEGRA FOUNDATION, Umoja Radio's vision was expanded beyond broadcasting to focus more intentionally on youth empowerment, talent development, mentorship, creativity and employment creation.
This new chapter provided an opportunity to build a platform that does more than entertain. Umoja Radio seeks to become a bridge between young people's potential and the opportunities that can help them turn that potential into meaningful careers and sustainable livelihoods.
Our Purpose
The central purpose of Umoja Radio is to give young people a chance to dream again.
Many young people possess remarkable talents, ideas and ambitions but lack the platforms, networks, mentorship and resources required to develop them. Umoja Radio seeks to address this gap by creating an environment where young people can:
- Showcase their talents and creativity.
- Tell their stories and share their experiences.
- Access mentorship and inspiration.
- Develop skills in media and entertainment.
- Connect with opportunities within the creative industry.
- Build confidence and discover their potential.
- Create and pursue employment opportunities.
- Participate in conversations that affect their lives and communities.
More Than a Radio Station
Umoja Radio represents the belief that media can be a tool for transformation.
Through programming, interviews, entertainment, youth conversations, talent showcases and community engagement, the platform seeks to discover and amplify voices that might otherwise remain unheard.
The station provides an avenue for emerging musicians, presenters, creatives, entrepreneurs, content creators, artists and other young talents to gain exposure and build valuable experience.
In doing so, Umoja Radio aims to contribute to the growth of Kenya's creative economy while helping young people see possibilities beyond the challenges they face.
Our Vision
To become a leading youth-focused media and talent-development platform that inspires young people to dream, discover their potential and create opportunities for themselves and others.
Our Mission
To empower young people through media, talent development, mentorship, creativity and opportunity creation while providing a platform where their voices, talents and dreams can be seen, heard and nurtured.
The Umoja Spirit
The name Umoja, meaning unity, reflects the foundation of the initiative.
Umoja Radio believes that when young people, creatives, mentors, organisations and communities come together, they can create opportunities that would be difficult to achieve individually.
The platform therefore seeks to build a community where talent meets opportunity, ideas meet support and dreams meet action.
Looking Ahead
From its beginnings in 2020, through its journey under Vflane, to its establishment under MAKEGRA FOUNDATION in 2024, Umoja Radio continues to evolve. The next chapter is about building a stronger and more sustainable youth platform — one that not only gives young people a microphone, but also gives them a platform, a network, skills, exposure and opportunities to build their future.
Umoja Radio's story is ultimately a story about possibility.
It is about reminding a generation that their circumstances do not have to define their future; that their voices matter; that their talents have value; and that, with the right platform and support, they can dream again.
